A design by HNTB with Michael Van Valkenburgh & Associates (MVVA) has been chosen as the winner of ARC, an international competition to design a new generation of infrastructure to help wildlife to cross roads.
The wildlife will be the real winners in the competition to design a crossing of the Interstate 70 in Colorado near the ski resorts of Vail and Breckenridge. Currently a wide variety of wildlife including bears, deer and lynx risk their lives and that of road users crossing the busy highway each year.
One of the aims of the competition has been to increase the number of potential solutions for cost-efficient, innovative crossing designs that can be adapted for widespread use in other locations.
“The winning proposal by HNTB and MVVA is not only eminently possible; it has the capacity to transform what we think of as possible,” summed up one of the jury members.
The competition was intended to raise awareness of the need to better reconcile the construction and maintenance of road networks with wildlife movement.
