Steel industry focuses on topic of sustainability and presents itself with a compact exhibit in Hall B2 at BAU 2011"Build responsibly – Conserve resources"

Steel is the key for new generations of buildings. Comprehensive recycling at the end of its useful life is what characterises steel as a regenerative building material. It is nearly irreplaceable, even when combined and in interaction with other building materials. Furthermore, steel will continue to increase in importance in the future. After all, to reach the environmental objectives pursued by the political sector and promote sustainable construction, increasingly strict requirements are being placed on the products and techniques used in construction for which steel already offers a variety of solutions. Information about these solutions will be available to visitors in Hall B2 at BAU in Munich from 17 - 22 January 2011.

Steel producers, traders, processers and their organisations will all be represented in the same hall to give industry professionals and everyone interested in the building process a comprehensive look at construction expertise with knowledgeable contacts and distances that are kept to a minimum. The steel industry has been committed to the goal of sustainability for quite some time. And since it is one of BAU's main themes, the profiles and products at the 2011 fair will revolve around increased efficiency and sustainability, flexible and recyclable building systems, high-performance structural steel to conserve resources as well as facades and protection systems for especially durable buildings that retain their value. The range of information and consulting services addresses architects, planners, engineers and metalworking trades as well as building owners and future professionals in the industry.

The newly formed trade association >>bauforumstahl and its co-exhibitors ArcelorMittal, Gallardo, Salzgitter and other representatives of the steel trade are exhibiting at a joint exhibition stand with 340 m² of space (Stand B2/318). Their exhibits will revolve around a presentation campus, the slogan of which is "New Thinking for Sustainable Building". Renowned architects and structural engineers will report on the latest topics in the sectors for sustainability, industrial/commercial construction, office and administration-building construction and building culture. Depending on the topic, the campus programme is being carried out in conjunction with various organisations including the German Sustainable Building Council (DGNB) and the Institute Construction and Environment (IBU). The Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) for structural steel (open rolled sections and heavy plates) that applies to all of Europe and is due to be released in time for BAU will also be introduced. It gives engineers and architects assistance when planning sustainable structures made from steel and gives building owners added security with regard to property retaining its value.

The Stahl-Informations-Zentrum (Steel Information Centre) (Stand B2/303) will combine its consulting expertise with that of the Industrial Association for Structural Systems in Lightweight Metal Construction (IFBS) and Institut Feuerverzinken (Galvanisation Institute) at a joint exhibition stand. Current requirements regarding energy optimisation of buildings call for roofs and facades with extremely effective thermal insulation. Structural components made from surface-treated steel that have excellent thermal insulation properties and are lightweight, which makes them easy to install, will be presented. The sandwich, trapezoidal plate and panel systems feature covering shells less than 1 mm thick. They are now being used to cover production and warehouse halls as well as office and administrative buildings. Given the diverse range of available colours and shapes, they also offer a great deal of flexibility with regard to architectural design. Galvanised steel sections not only ensure optimal protection against corrosion, they are also the basis for lightweight, sturdy and extremely long-lasting supporting structures that are flexible and can be adapted to changing uses.

The joint exhibition stand of Informationsstelle Edelstahl Rostfrei (Stainless Steel Information Office) (Stand B2/302) features more than 20 companies from the stainless-steel industry that specialise in everything from connecting techniques to rooftop solar systems. Stainless steels contribute considerably to building sustainability and care.

Steel manufacturers and the steel trade will emphasise the following points at BAU 2011 in the sense of sustainable building techniques and systems:

Among other things, the ArcelorMittal Group (Stand B2/318), which will be represented by ArcelorMittal Commercial Long Deutschland GmbH and ArcelorMittal Construction Deutschland GmbH, will present its HISTAR high-strength fine-grain structural steel. In the sector for multiple-storey and commercial building construction, Angelina™ cellular beams, IFB and SFB floor beams, Cofradal 200 precast composite flooring and the Cofraplus220 system for car-park construction are opening up new design possibilities. When it comes to building facades, Module4, Sunstyl, Evos and the K-energy global wall system ensure energy-efficient, lightweight construction.

Stahlwerk Thüringen (Stand B2/318) and its sales organisation Gallardo Sections S.L. will present its product portfolio of sectional steel for sustainable steel structures. It will also place special emphasis on its integrated environmental management system that includes quality assurance in the interest of the customer as well as environmental protection, safety and health at the workplace. The East German company was the first certified metallurgy plant in Germany and has many years of experience.

Salzgitter AG (Stand B2/318) will be on hand with its subsidiaries Peiner Träger GmbH (PTG) and Salzgitter Bauelemente GmbH (SZBE). PTG will have its entire range of diverse structural shapes and wide flange beams on display. These highly developed steels make optimisation with regard to lightweight design and economy in steel construction possible and can also be used for offshore construction projects. SZBE will present the various applications for SIP Salzgitter Insulation Panels in industrial and hall construction. A joint exhibit focuses on trendsetting solutions in the field of building physics/energy applications.

The exhibit of ThyssenKrupp Steel Europe (Stand B2/308), the slogan of which is "Steel Goes Green", revolves around economical solutions for sustainable building against the backdrop of recent certifications and legal requirements. Special emphasis will be placed on innovative products like the new metal coating ZM EcoProtect, the Hoesch Matrix® facade system and the products in the new Firetec® family. The best of examples of renovating for improved energy efficiency include improved products such as Planeel® Premium or Hoesch isowand integral® with the FSI window system.

Vallourec & Mannesmann Tubes (Stand B2/309) is a supplier of square, rectangular and circular hot-finished MSH (Mannesmann Stahlbau Hohlprofile) sections for the construction sector. Innovative PREON® girder components for flexible hall construction will also be presented. The construction system is particularly well suited for large column-free span widths, and besides aesthetic aspects, offers the advantages of economic hall construction, i.e. quick and affordable realisation thanks to standardisation. The exhibition stand itself is designed as a PREON® hall.

Interessengemeinschaft Bauforum Stahl – IGBS im Stahlhandel (Stand B2/318) and its member companies will present their wide range of services, which now includes far more than conventional distribution functions. Their service centres and processing centres offer the processing of plates, structural shapes and pipes/tubes into ready-to-install components for building and bridge construction. The steel trade provides the construction elements for shell construction of the new type and quality-tested steel halls made of rolled steel sections developed by >>bauforumstahl.
